Rick Warren: How to Build a Strong Financial Foundation

1.) Remember that God is your source of supply - God wants you to be productive (Deutoronomy 8:18). There is nothing wrong in being financially productive if you do it God's way. God owns everything (Romans 11:36) but he loans it to you.

2.) Honor God first - Whatever you want God to bless; put him first in it (for example your time finances, marriage, career, business e.t.c.).

3.) Save money faithfully - (tithe 10%, save 10%, live on 80%). Proverbs 21:20, 24:27 Next time you get a raise, act like you didn't get it. Put it away and reinvest it to make more money before spending it on nice things (Ecclesiastes 11:2 - diversify, Proverbs 13:11 it's not the amount you save that's important it's the consistency). Save for retirement.

4.) Keep good records - write it down, keep track, know where your finances are going. Note how much you make, how much you need to spend on, how much you need to save (Proverbs 21:5, Proverbs 27:23-24).

Easy credit + ignorance of your financial condition = financial disaster

Four things you need to know

I. What you own

II. What you earn

III. What you owe

IV. Where it goes

5.) Plan your spending - (Proverbs 21:5). Impulse buying is a form of emotional spending. You see it and you want it you didn't know you needed it till you saw it. A budget is simply planned spending where you tell your money where you want it to go.

Rick warren recounts how he bought a used car he drove for three years before passing it to his sons who passed it to their cousin making it a total of ten years of use). Cars are the number one cause of debt but they are not for impressing people but for getting from point a to b.

Three ways to plan your spending
I.  Living on a budget not just planning a budget (Proverbs 21:5 & 20).

II. Set up a repayment plan (Proverbs 3:27, Romans 13:8)

III. Making a will: revise it as you grow in finances

6.) Enjoy what you have - AKA the law of contentment (Ecclesiastes 5:19)

Money management is a test set by God on life management (Luke 16:11) which has eternal whether you have a lot or little money is irrelevant what is more important is if you were faithful with what you were given
